Real Stories · Vaping
I quit smoking four years ago. The vape I quit with has me more hooked than cigarettes ever did.
I told everyone I'd stopped. Technically true. What I'd actually done was swap twelve cigarettes a day for a device I could use every four minutes — indoors, in bed, on a work call — and never had to put out.

The moment I understood was at twenty to five in the morning, in the dark, running my hand along the bedside table for a disposable I already knew was dead. I'd flattened it the night before. I knew that. I checked anyway, twice, and then I lay there doing the maths on when the corner shop opened.
I'm 38. I smoked from 22 to 34, about twelve a day, and I stopped by switching to vaping — which everyone told me was the sensible move, and which I still believe was better than carrying on with cigarettes.
But I need to be honest about what happened next, because nobody warned me. Four years on, I hadn't gone a single waking day without nicotine. Not one. I vaped in the shower with the window open. I vaped on video calls with the camera angled up. And somewhere in year two the chest tightness and the dry, barking cough I'd left behind with the cigarettes quietly came back and moved in.
I'd quit smoking. I had absolutely not quit.
Does any of this sound familiar?
I only wrote this list out afterwards. At the time, each one on its own felt like nothing.
Be honest — nobody sees this.
It took me four years to read this list in one place, and I still argued with half of it.

Cigarettes ended. The vape never did.
Here's the thing about a cigarette that I only appreciated once I no longer had one: it finishes.
Twelve a day meant twelve decisions with a hard stop at the end of each. You go outside. It burns down. It's over. There's a smell on your fingers and a bin to use and a reason not to immediately start another. Twelve full stops in a day, built into the product.
A disposable has no full stops.
- Stopping points a day
- 0
- How it ends
- It doesn't. It waits at body temperature in your pocket
- What it costs you to start
- Nothing. Two seconds and no evidence
- Where you can use it
- Realistically, everywhere you shouldn't
- Do you know your intake?
- No — 600 puffs is a number nobody tracks
That's the whole thing, and it took me four years to see it. The only thing standing between me and another draw was a decision I now had to make several hundred times a day instead of twelve.
I lost that argument several hundred times a day.

Twelve full stops a day, against none.
I hadn't broken the habit. I'd removed every natural stopping point from it, and then acted surprised when it ran all day.

How four years actually went

What is it actually costing you?
The sliders start on my numbers. Move them to yours — nothing is sent anywhere.
That's roughly 260 devices a year through your hands — and the necklace is a one-off with refills, not a subscription to a corner shop.
When I finally added it up, the number wasn't even the part that got me. It was that I'd switched to vaping partly because it was supposed to be cheaper, and then never checked again.
Four things I tried before this one
Patches
They did what patches do — handled the chemical, which is a rough three or four days and then it eases. I got through that more than once. What I couldn't get through was my hand going to my pocket twenty times an hour and coming back empty. The loop just hung there open.
Stepping down my strength
20mg, then 10, then 5. All I did was vape more of the weaker one and think about nicotine constantly. I was still holding it, still drawing on it, still tied to a charger and a delivery date. Smaller dose, bigger obsession.
Cold turkey, twice
Three days, both times. The second one ended in a petrol station at ten at night, buying a device at a price I'd have laughed at in any other context.
A 0mg vape
This felt clever for about a week. No nicotine — but still a battery, still a liquid being heated, still something that wasn't air going in, still devices to reorder. I'd kept the entire apparatus and removed the only part that was doing anything. It felt less like quitting and more like a costume.

The thing my partner ordered looked like jewellery
It turned up in a small box and I genuinely thought she'd bought me a necklace, which was not the response I'd expected to another failed quit attempt.
It is a necklace. That's the point. A slim cord with a small pendant that sits at your collarbone, and when the urge hits you lift it, put it to your lips, and draw.
No nicotine. No tobacco. No e-liquid. No vapour. No battery, no coil, no pod, no charging cable, nothing to run out at 11pm. You pull air through a narrowed channel that gives you real resistance — that firm, satisfying draw you've been chasing all day — and if there's a flavour refill in, air passes around it and you catch a clean note of mint or coffee on the way past. Nothing is heated. Nothing is burned. You are breathing air.
It's called the BreatheFree Resistance Necklace, and after four years of increasingly sophisticated hardware, my honest first reaction was that it was far too simple to do anything.

Why a breath works when a 0mg vape doesn't
I read up on it properly, mostly out of scepticism, and once I understood the reasoning I couldn't unsee it.
The draw is what disposables actually hooked you on
Four years of lifting something to my lips and pulling on it carved a groove far deeper than twelve cigarettes a day ever did, simply because I did it hundreds of times more often. Willpower doesn't fill a groove — a substitute does. The Resistance Necklace slots into the identical physical sequence: pocket, lips, draw. The loop completes instead of hanging open.
It's the only version of that draw with nothing in it
This is the bit that finally separated it from my 0mg experiment. There's no battery, no heating element and no liquid, so there's no aerosol — nothing is turned into anything. The airflow channel is calibrated to narrow, so the resistance is real and engineered rather than chemical. You feel the pull. Your chest expands. And what goes in is air.
Nothing to escalate, because there's no dose
My whole vaping history was a ladder: 6mg, 12mg, 20mg salts, and every rung felt necessary at the time. There's no rung here. No strength, no taper, no lower setting to renegotiate with yourself at 2am, and nothing to wean off when you're finished with it.
The long exhale is the part that was calming you
Slow, extended out-breaths are a well-documented way of settling the nervous system. Every time I stepped outside "for a vape" to take the edge off a bad meeting, I was doing paced breathing and giving the nicotine the credit. You can keep the breath. It turns out the breath was never the problem.

What's actually in it
The device: nothing
Without a refill there is literally nothing inside — just engineered airflow that creates a smooth, satisfying resistance when you draw.
Natural flavour extracts
The aroma you notice as air passes around the refill. Mint, coffee, blueberry, strawberry, watermelon.
Plant-derived essential oils
The light sensory element that makes the draw feel like something rather than nothing. Mint varieties carry natural menthol.
Nothing else
No nicotine. No tobacco. No e-liquid. No vapour. No coil. Nothing to charge and nothing to taper off.

What it is not
- Not a vape, and not a 0mg vape either. No battery, no heating element, no e-liquid, no aerosol. Nothing is inhaled but air.
- Not a nicotine replacement therapy. It contains no nicotine at any strength.
- Not a medical device or a smoking-cessation product. BreatheFree describe it as a wellness accessory for mindful breathing and habit replacement. It doesn't treat, cure or prevent any disease.
- Not magic. It handles the ritual. You still have to decide to stop.

What the first three months actually looked like
I'm not going to pretend day one was a revelation. Day one I felt ridiculous, standing on my own balcony breathing through a piece of jewellery.
But I didn't vape that day. That was the first day in four years I could say that.

What actually turns up in the box
This was the part I didn't expect. It isn't just the necklace — and for someone who has failed at this as often as I have, the rest of it mattered more than it sounds.

The Resistance Necklace
The device itself, on its cord. Nothing to charge, nothing to replace but the refills.

Flavour refills
Three per packet, roughly a month each depending on use. Mint, coffee, blueberry, strawberry, watermelon.

The row that mattered to me was the second-to-last one, because that was my plan B. A 0mg vape gets you off the nicotine and leaves you holding the machine: the battery, the aerosol, the pods, the reorder, the whole apparatus that had me reaching every four minutes in the first place. It solves the drug and keeps the device.
The last row is the only one that does the opposite — keeps the gesture, keeps the draw, keeps the breath, and quietly removes everything else.
A few practical things I only appreciated later:
- It can't die on you. No battery, no charging, no cable in the wrong bag. In four years of vaping I never once relapsed onto cigarettes — but I did panic-buy at petrol stations more times than I want to write down, purely because a device had run out.
- You can use it on a flight. Or a train, or in an office, or in bed next to someone who hates the smell of blue raspberry. Nothing is emitted, so none of the rules that apply to vaping apply to it.
- Nobody asks about it. It reads as jewellery. I have never once had to explain myself, which after four years of being the guy who nips out mid-conversation is worth something on its own.
- The spend stops. Two devices every three days had become invisible to me. The refills last about a month each, three to a packet.

Rated 5 out of 5
I smoked for over 40 years & was able to quit with this device. My doctor had begged me to quit for years, but I was consumed with worry about failing due to the hand to mouth habit. Now, I can go for days without needing the device.
Rated 5 out of 5
Okay, I'll admit, I was skeptical. But this actually helps curb urges. The flavors feel so refreshing.
Rated 5 out of 5
Was coughing constantly every morning. Knew I had to make a change this new year. The watermelon flavor is amazing and actually satisfies that hand to mouth urge.
Rated 5 out of 5
My tight chest is gone, I sleep through the night, and I'm back hitting the gym. The necklace uses breathing resistance to mimic that familiar draw — it's actually genius.
Rated 5 out of 5
Breathefree has completely transformed how I feel. My lungs are healthier, my skin is clearer, and I wake up every day feeling refreshed and full of energy.
Rated 5 out of 5
Been smoking for 30 years... I was at 2.5 packs a day... since receiving mine I have been between 6 to 8 cigs a day... day number 3 so far. Very hopeful this will help me quit for good.

Why people trust it
Questions I had before I ordered
Isn't this just a 0mg vape?
No, and this was my first question too. A 0mg vape still has a battery, a heating element and a liquid — it turns something into an aerosol and you inhale it. There is no battery and no heating here. Air is drawn through a calibrated channel, and if you're using a flavour refill the air passes around it rather than through it, so you catch a light aroma without inhaling any substance.
I'm on 20mg salts. Is this going to touch that?
Be honest with yourself about what it does and doesn't do: it contains no nicotine, so it doesn't replace the chemical side at all. What it replaces is the hand-to-mouth loop and the draw — which, if you're on disposables, is the part running hundreds of times a day. BreatheFree don't present it as a medical or stop-smoking treatment, and plenty of people use it alongside a taper or alongside NRT rather than instead of one.
Does it give a throat hit?
Not a chemical one — that sensation in a vape comes from the nicotine and the liquid. What you get here is genuine draw resistance from the airflow channel, plus a cool note if you use a mint refill. Different thing, same physical gesture.
Do I have to stop vaping the day it arrives?
That's your call, and there's no dose to coordinate with. There's nothing addictive in it and no usage limit, so some people keep it on the cord for a week first and use it in the gaps before they set a quit date.
Does it need charging?
No battery, no charging, no cable, no pods. It runs on your breath. The only thing you replace is the flavour refill, and only if you use them.
How many refills come in a packet, and how long do they last?
Three per packet, each lasting roughly a month depending on how heavily you use it. BreatheFree suggest up to three packets for a longer run, or a monthly subscription so you always have fresh ones — relapse tends to happen when you run out.
What's in the refills?
Natural flavour extracts, plant-derived essential oils and natural flavouring substances. Mint varieties contain natural menthol. They're for aromatic use only and are not intended for ingestion.
How often can I use it?
As often as you want. In the first week most people reach for it constantly, and that's fine — there's no dose to track and nothing addictive in it.
Can I use it where vaping isn't allowed?
Nothing is burned, heated or turned into vapour, so nothing is emitted and what you breathe out is just air. That's why it works on flights, trains and at a desk.
How long does delivery take?
Usually 5–8 days, though it varies by country. Shipping is tracked and insured worldwide, so you can see where the order is the whole way.
What if it doesn't work for me?
There's a 30-day money-back guarantee: if you don't quit within 30 days, email support@breathefree.shop for a refund, no questions asked.

The honest summary
Switching to vaping did get me off cigarettes, and I'm not going to pretend otherwise. What it also did was take a habit with twelve natural stopping points a day and give it none, and I spent four years mistaking that for progress because the packaging looked healthier.
Patches were solving a problem I only half had. Stepping down my strength made the dose smaller and the obsession bigger. A 0mg vape kept me holding the exact machine I was trying to put down.
The Resistance Necklace was the first thing that took the gesture seriously and put nothing at the end of it. That's the whole trick, and it's a much smaller trick than four years of hardware had led me to expect.
My chest is quiet. I sleep through. My pocket is empty.
